Mónica Valenciano

Dancer and choreographer, Trained in ballet, contemporary dance and theatre at the Theatre Institute of Barcelona and graduated from the RESAD, Madrid. She completed her training with other disciplines: Iyengar yoga, R. Laban, improvisation, boxing, archery and Thai Chi at the Traditional School of Martial Arts of Wudang. In 1996 she founded the company El bailadero. Among other the works she has directed and performed Aupa; Puntos Suspensivos; Miniaturas; Peso Gallo; Adivina en plata; La serie de los disparates: nº1: Hueso de Santo, nº2: De cuerpos presentes, nº3: Rio, nº 4: Transparencias, nº 5: 5 Misterios, nº 6: 22 Visiones, nº 7: Don´t Explain;  and Señorita Nieve y Guitarra.

In Parallel to her performance works Valenciano has developed a pedagogical line, teaching courses and workshops. Along with other choreographers she created de research collectives UVI and LA INESPERADA. Her drawings and texts have been presented at different exhibitions and poetical readings (Casa de América de Madrid, Librería Arrebato, Festival Mira, etc.). Together with Chus Domínguez, she researches on the language of the body in the image shearing several research residencies. She has published the books: Música en los huesos (Ed. La luz Roja), Diarios de una estación (Ed. La Porta, Barcelona), Octava: Un pescador con subtítulos (Ed. Escrito a lápiz) and Disparates (Pliegos de teatro y danza, de Antonio F. Lera).

Her pieces have been shown in theatres and festivals such as: Madrid en Danza, Escena Contemporánea, Dança al Teatre Overt, La Porta (Barcelona), Klapstuk Festival (Belgique), Plural, Festival de Montreal, Jabos Pillow (EEUU), American Dance Festival, Dansa Valencia, Mind the Gap (London), Festival de las Arts d´Ottawa (Canada), Menàgerie de Vèrre (Paris), Centro Cultural de Belén (Lisboa), Theatre de L´Usine (Genebre), Instituto Cervantes (Paris); the Festival de Latitudes Contemporaines de Lille (France), Festival Lignes des corps, Valenciennes, (France); Centre Corèografique Nacional de Tours (CCNT), (Francia); Thèâtre de La Bastille, (París), Pole Sus, Estrasburgo, Francia, Centre Choreographic de Rennes, France; Festival Instances, Chalon-sur-Saone, France, etc. The Festival Desviaciones 1999, (Madrid) showed a retrospective of her work. The Festival Escena Contemporánea of Madrid 2004 dedicated to her work the cicle Perfil.
